NEWS & EVENTS

Clubhouse Update – 8th May 2018

The construction of the new clubhouse and facilities is progressing well. The pitches, access road and car parks are almost completed. The clubhouse is nearly up to roof level. The cold periods early in the year and the more recent heavy rain have caused some delays but overall the construction works are likely to recover the schedule which should see the clubhouse completed by the end of October. One major issue for the developer relates to the selected utilities contractor entering into voluntary liquidation in January. This has resulted in the need for a re-run of a time consuming procurement procedure to secure a new fully compliant utilities contractor. As a result, it is now highly likely that the essential utility services of gas, electric and water are unlikely to be completed till closer to the end of 2018. Overall this, coupled with both the lead in time to prepare for our long standing functions and the need to move equipment from the existing clubhouse indicates that delaying the opening of the new clubhouse until summer 2019 might be better for all parties. We continue discussions on this matter.

Our relationships with the developer Henry Boot Developments, the construction company A.W. Hardy Ltd and Southend Borough Council remain extremely positive with the club’s representatives being consulted on many design and construction issues.

Key decisions about the design of the bar, the layout of the kitchen and the orientation of the cellar are being worked at the present time. The club’s volunteers on the Relocation Steering Committee Bob Smith, Chris Bard, Larrold Mckluskey, Steve Diggins, Rick Compton and Adrian Livemore continue to spend many hours of their time working on behalf of the club. They are being impressively supported by our appointed surveyors the Baines Group. Without doubt the new clubhouse and pitches will provide us with one of the finest sporting facilities for an amateur sports club in the country.

These are exciting times for Westcliff RFC and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the large number of club members who continue to support the club with their time and expertise on a voluntary basis.

Yours in Rugby

Legacy Fund – Future of WRFC

As most of you know, this season is likely to be the last year we will be playing rugby at ‘The Gables’ as we prepare to move homes.

We as an Exec, see this move as a way to secure the future of the club and as such, are looking to extend the lease of the clubhouse. This is essential for the survival of the club, as has been outlined by the relocation committee many times in their updates. The current lease runs out in 2045 and we wish to extend this to 2075 securing the club for another 58 years…..at least.

To do this, it is going to cost the club £65,000 plus VAT but we feel this worth doing now, so we move to our new home with the future of the club safely secured.

We are asking for all our members to help raise part of this money and so for this, we are launching a Legacy Fund, where we will be giving regular updates on how much we have raised and who has been involved in raising money for this.

We are asking you to think of events, fund raising ideas and anything you can do to help raise funds to secure the future of our great club. We will be asking all senior teams, youth teams and mini teams to run events and raise money for this.

To start with, we will be putting a box on the membership forms and you can select this and opt to pay an extra £25 when you pay your membership this year. This will go into the fund and will help to kick start the fundraising.

So please tick the box and give an extra £25 in your payment of your subs this year to make sure you are doing your part to secure the future and legacy of our prodigious club.

If you have any fundraising ideas, please email Chris Whiston or Ty Harris. Click here for the membership form.

WRFC Club Shop
