Our last league game of the season saw us take on Brentwood who had last week finished runners up in the Essex Cup Final and have been on quite a revival in 2018 . It would be a tough finishing game.
Today also marked a sad day for the U15s as it would be Adams last ever game for Westcliff RFC . Both Adam and the rest of the team could not have been more motivated to end on a high .
The game started brightly and it was clear Brentwoods pack would be tough to hold – within 2 minutes the huge number 8 saw a gap from the scrum and ran in under the posts. Some head shaking and words were had and from that moment on he would not be allowed to run over our forwards again. The rest of the first half was hard tough rugby with the forwards taking a real pounding but never giving an inch. We hoped that somehow they could keep it going for the whole match. When we did get the ball in the backs we could clearly see this is where we could make ground and have success – but we were going to have to win the ball more to capitalise.
HT – Westcliff 0 Brentwood 7
West started the second half superbly and were growing in confidence that they were a match for our bigger opponents and it was no more than we deserved when Adam made a break and went in under the posts for his last ever try for Westcliff. Baily converted as Adam was looking injured – my comment at the time ” he will have to have his leg hanging off before he will come off today ” ! Brentwood were clearly rattled and despite making it into our 22 and with the bigger pack opted for 3 points to retake the lead. But West had their tails up and went hunting for more tries. Some good kicks from Baily and a couple of unlucky bounces with Ben waiting to pounce made us start to think it wasn’t our day but then the breakthrough came and Charlie B got over in the corner. The conversion was just missed from the touchline – but we were back in front. The war of attrition started and West were finishing the stronger but a penalty was somehow given to Brentwood and they took the opportunity to kick and made it to take a 1 point lead with 5 minutes left. The last 5 minutes saw West clearly desperate to win and they ran their hearts out, tackled as ferociously as they had all day but the clock was against us and when Brentwood turned it over they were overjoyed to be able to kick the ball into touch.
Heartbreaking scoreline but what a performance.
Todays game for me was the best of the season – the effort the commitment the all round play was fantastic – if this is the future for us then it will be a good one. Extremely proud of every single player today .
