This Sunday saw us return to Essex Cup action and an eagerly anticipated Semi Final against Harlow. We were almost at full strength for the first time in a long time – hopefully it wont be long before we are. First Team changing room, Pitch 1 in front of the clubhouse and a growing crowd – who may have been here for the Essex v Kent game after but who cares ! – gave us all the ingredients for a good day – would we rise to the occasion ??
Yet again we started the match like lightning this time scoring with our first possession after some good initial work and some good hands through the backs Charlie B was in at the corner for a try.
Yet again we started the match like lightning this time scoring with our second possession after some good initial work and some good hands through the backs Charlie B was in at the corner for a try.
No that’s not an error – it just happened again !
The team were full of confidence and were matching a very physical Harlow set of forwards but we always looked dangerous out wide.
It was therefore no surprise when we ended the half with another try this time Dylan L on the other wing getting loose and diving over the line again in the corner. No conversions so far we needed to get nearer the posts !

An easy half time team talk – keep playing just as you are – keep matching them up front and then ship it wide quickly .
The second half started and this time it was Harlow that started the better and duly got themselves on the scoreboard with their first try. We needed to regroup and settle down we don’t want to let them back into the game ! Easier said then done .
Harlow were buoyed by their score but West kept their cool and kept working the phases and got the try they needed when Baily went over the line – an easier kick this time Adam duly converting. It appeared to take the pressure off and West began to play some nice rugby and scored again with a delightfully controlled set of forward phases followed by quick ball all the way out with James L going in at the corner . No conv.
Harlow could well have given it up at that point but they certainly did not and when there fullback came racing through some very half hearted tackles he went all the way in and under the posts for a deserved try.
With time running down there was one last push from West and this time the forwards did all the work with a steady run of controlled phases again getting deep into the 22 the ball came to Will C who looked like he was not quite there but somehow in a sort of slow motion tree being felled – arm fully stretched with ball in one hand managed to ground the ball on the line.
FT Westcliff 32 Harlow 12
A good solid overall performance from West with some good controlled phases and structure to their play.
We already know the Final will be at home to Braintree – another close game awaits im sure and like Maldon can we gain revenge for our defeat earlier in the season ??
