Match Report

A much anticipated first match against Saracens had the team in good spirits going into what was no doubt going to be a difficult match . Our psychic head coach warned us that they would have either an exceptional full back or winger or possibly both – he wasn’t wrong !
We were a little low on numbers and had everyone involved in the squad and decided to utilise the bench throughout the game to give everyone the opportunity for game time against our illustrious opposition.
The game started brightly and so did Westcliff with some good forward work carrying them deep into the Sarries half –a bit of “relentless” and Harley popped over for our first score – Adam converted. Sarries didn’t take much time in responding with a try of their own but some great back play from Adam and Owen gave Baily the opportunity to retake the lead with a well worked try. It was obvious Sarries were going to try and play through the backs and were operating a rush defence all day. They had a slice of fortune to equalise and then the full back showed us a clean pair of heels scoring from distance – twice !! Giving Sarries a rather flattering half time lead.

The second half was a similar pattern to the first – we were much better in the forwards – with the exception of the huge Sarries No.8 who was also deceptively fast – and Sarries backs having the better of it. The No.8 did indeed score and make a try before West came back yet again to score with a fine individual effort from Adam duly converted. At this point the Sarries full back decided to remind us all how good he was and duly scored a couple more tries.

The scoreline itself in no way reflects the match , the effort or the skill displayed by Westcliff today. As a spectator commented the best 3 tries were all scored by Westcliff ! Without a doubt one of the best team performances of the season – everyone gave their all and played some terrific rugby against quality opposition. More of this type of performance will not see us go wrong for the remainder of the season.
