Match Report

Back to League action this week and the re-arranged fixture against old foes Braintree – what is it about these two sides that always creates such great close games !!
The boys were being watched by one of the Saracen Elite coaches as well as their new head coach for the first time .
West were without a few regulars and even lost another in the warm up but regardless we made the necessary changes and asked the boys to give it their all – they did not disappoint.
West again started well and from a scrum a well worked blindside move from Haydn gave Baily the opportunity to go over in the corner for the first points of the day.
But not to be phased Braintree responded almost immediately with their own try and followed that up with a converted try – was the start of the slippery slope ??
A penalty just inside the Braintree half gave us the chance to kick for touch and gain some ground – Adam lined up for the kick and ……….. took a quick tap , burst through and was racing towards the posts before Braintree even realised what had happened – he did make it for a well deserved try and conversion.

The second half promised as much as the first but this time it was Braintree that started the better scoring quickly.
Back came West though and some great forward work eventually found George W with not far to go and he duly pounced over the line for the score – Adam duly converting and putting us back in front.
The game was ferocious but always fair and the two teams were really slugging it out with a bit of a war of attrition at times however Braintree seemed to have more strength in depth and the changes were having the desired effect 2 tries in quick succession opened the gap to 8 pts . We thought the boys were running out of legs but they kept finding more and when Adam went over for another score with his shirt mostly off his back and barely being able to see where he was going we were back in the game 1pt behind.
Nailbiting stuff but West couldn’t get the possession they needed to get that last chance and with the last move of the match Braintree somehow scored a late try.

An absolutely outstanding performance from West on the day – under strength, players out of position none of it mattered they gave their heart and soul for the team and each other today . Continue to do that and they will not be on the losing side too often.
